In the vacation season of July, 2013, we are pleased to open <Machine, Dreaming of Life>, an exhibition reviewing a dynamic side of contemporary art, pursuing GMoMA’s interest in representing the vitality of everyday life in art. Art has developed in various forms since its first known appearance over 25,000 years ago. From the imitation of nature, such as representational paintings, to revolutionary forms including abstract art, art has consistently been experimental to reflect the spirit of the contemporary period. About 200years ago, artists began to claimed to support of the idea ‘Art for art’s sake’.

However, despite how experimental art has been, it is always limited by its physicality. The artists presented in this exhibition <Machine, Dreaming of Life> approach a new module of art from a completely different angle. The legendary Greek sculptor Pygmalion, who made a statue so realistic that he fell in love with it, gave a great vitality to sculpture. I look forward to the machine aesthetics of the 21c creating dynamic art works that are focused on giving a life beyond their physicality. The artists in this exhibition <Machine, Dreaming of Life>, share a common theme with Pygmalion and the viewers are encouraged to experience the art works in the exhibition in a way that reflects the vitality of sculpture.

The concept of Machine aesthetics in the beginning of 20c was widely influential on art movements such as Cubism, Absolutism, Constructivism, De stijl, Bauhaus, Purism, Modern architecture and Geometric abstraction. Also, it had influence on the development of kinetic art, represented motion, physical forms and power. The artists presented in <Machine, Dreaming of life> are concerned not only in surface physicality but also of inner structure and operation, adopting machines to work as organisms which surround us. As much of the art of 20c questions the objectivity of an object, I expect the machine like art work in this exhibition to be treated like creatures that have a real life.

Modern art always pursues the desire of a contemporary period. The truth is a desire that humans have always dreamt of. Many artists today are seeking for a new module of art and trying to give ‘vitality to machines’ because it is a major issue and demand for today. Leonardo da Vinci’s desire was considered absurd during his life but many of his ideas came true over time. Today the universal use of artificial intelligence has spread despite an the anxiety of dystopia. Our role is to accept reality, to dream of Utopia, and not to worry about dystopian possibilities. It is our hope this exhibition <Machine, Dreaming of life>, that presents a visual output that will possibly come true, will receive a lot of attention and play a key role in the contemporary Korean art scene.
