On the occasion of the Family Month, May, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art presents the exhibition, wannabe your famdy members-story of companion animals to enhance social awareness of .companion animals’ as the new members of third family through art. Since the Agricultural Age humans have raised animals. Of course, these animals were a means of production, raised with economic, practical purposes for food and labor, and thus regarded as each family’s valued property. However, animals living with humans in contemporary society have been objects completely different to those in our previous consciousness. They gained a new appellation, companion animal as partners of human joy. anger, sorrow, and pleasure in life.

A companion refers to a mate. A mate is not a being like a plaything to be simply tended and enjoyed. Such an animal has been so far called a pet animal. A companion is a mate to have emotional communion with and a partner to redeem humanity’s shortcomings. A companion animal is thus referred to as an animal for communicating with emotionally, offering solace to, and living together with humans. It is known that the population raising companion dogs in Korea is almost 10 million. Including people keeping other animals, the population may be much more. Korea is without doubt the country of animal lovers. In a way however, abuse and abandonment of such animals takes place frequently. Over one hundred thousand animals are known to be abandoned each year. This means the pet-loving culture of Korea is always in a contradictory situation in that Korean animal lovers often abandon familiar life forms if they are under any bad circumstance.

wannabe your famdy members-story of companion animals intends to lessen such a contradictory reality. It is to share with those accepting companion animals as their family members the responsibility of taking care of their beloved animals to the end of their lives. Visual artists, illustrators, magazine chief editors, and persons from an animal welfare organization invited to the exhibition have made statements on the nobility of all life forms in diverse ways, based on their awareness of and warmhearted viewpoints toward companion animals. Companion animals portrayed in their works expressing their sorrow for numerous animals which are abandoned by humans, are their family members and their own self-portraits.

The exhibition is arranged to help us consider companion animals as third family or new family members, and is expected to serve as momentum to settle our awareness of companion animals as beings living together with humans, not merely as pet animals.
