Child Psychology in Picture
Period/ 2013.03.09(Sat) ~ 2013.05.05(Sun)
KANG Sang Woo

My works on show at this exhibition aim to represent images from my dreams that made an impression on me during my childhood with reference to visual effects and principles found in specific notable paintings. They also intend to address the trauma I experienced at that time in three-dimensional installation work with reference to the principles of art psychotherapy.

Inspired by the stark contrast of shades and surface textures in The Forest (1927-28) by Max Ernst and the unique, steep shapes found in the hills and mountains in the background of Flight into Egypt (1304-06) by Giotto, I compared such elements with those of the mountains I dreamed of as a child. The distinctive forms, tonalities, surface treatments, and techniques adopted in the two paintings were employed to create abstract three-dimensional representations of my dreams.

A childcare program that aired on TV in 2010 titled Child Psychology in Pictures aroused a lot of my interests and curiosity in terms of how to address visual signals and objects in art. Art psychotherapy treatments through which an art therapist analyzed the unconscious expressions in children’s paintings were appropriated for symbolic elements in my three three-dimensional installation works. Trauma 1, 2 (2013) and Toothpaste Game (2013) are works pertaining to my childhood trauma and its visual representations.

My drawing series has called attention to its contents and stories, arousing sympathy and interest from many viewers. My drawings primarily document my personal experiences and related reveries and unveil my imaginative interpretations of and perspectives toward trifling stories, multifarious childhood memories, and observed external historic events. When working on my paintings one by one, I am mainly concerned about how to convey the poignant sensation I feel at that moment to the appreciators of my works. I hope this exhibition will enable viewers to arouse their feelings of deep sympathy through the presentation of text and conversation for as long as they want.
