The Gyeonggi Art Project is designed to shed light on the art world of artists who have formed a variety of aspects in contemporary Korean art in 2016, highlighting the themes that reflect cultural assets in Gyeonggi Province as well as their idiosyncrasies. The project takes notice of the works and sources of the artists who have established their own distinctive idioms with the singularity of their thematic consciousness and forms of expression as an alternative to cope with fixed notions in contemporary Korean art.

The exhibit title Gyeonggi Japga was appropriated from a word that refers to songs primarily sung in the Seoul and Gyeonggi region since the late Joseon period. Unlike jeongak (정악, 正樂) which literally means “right music played at court,” japga (잡가, 雜歌) refers to a miscellaneous song that means a “trifling sound.” Despite being undervalued in comparison with jeongak, it was much acclaimed by the general public at the time. Japga, the sound that drew no attention, was widely sung and opened up a new horizon during a period when people were divided into two major classes: the higher and the lower. This mode of song allowed the public to be the subject of culture and the arts, reflecting a change in the times. Japga were songs that could not be defined within the frame of common sense and was music in a new form that broke preexisting molds.

This exhibition brings together the works of contemporary artists who remain outside the mainstream art scene, hinting at japga’s diversity and unrestrained freedom. These artists have already received attention as established artists at home and abroad but they have achieved this in ways different from those of mainstream society. This exhibition casts a light on those artists who have displayed new tendencies by expressing their thematic consciousness and methods through alternative spaces and channels without reposing on any typical capital like the school ties of prestigious art colleges. This exhibition is expected to serve as an opportunity to share a variety of artistic activities that have been carried out in the Gyeonggi art scene with the public and stimulate the creation of another artistic aspect, proving the existence of diversity in contemporary art history since the 1990s.
