Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (GMoMA) will host a special exhibition titled “Locus and Focus : into the 1980s through Art Group Archives”. This exhibition highlights small art groups that were active in the 1980s, which initiated Gyeonggi Modern Art Movement, based on the spirit of the times and artistic activism.

This exhibition first displays Du Reong’s paintings which were confiscated by the authorities at an exhibition, “Korean Art, Power of Youth” in 1985, and lost since then. After retrieving the seized paintings, some of them were reproduced. The exhibition includes approximately 3,000 pieces of art including more than 120 art works, and 1,060 historical records and materials, among others. They will be open to the public for the first time in over 30 years. On the opening day, special lectures will be organised regarding small art groups and their art movements in Incheon and Suwon in the 1980s. Yeollin Gut, a shamanistic ritual presented at the opening ceremony of Art Group, Du Reong (1984) will be run anew. Also, video interviews with members of the art groups, from the archives, will be on display, along with related collections, publications by art critics, and other materials.

The title of the exhibition, “Locus and Focus”, borrowed from a Suwon based art group’s name, means a deep insight into the turbulent times in Korean history and art. The group was first named Point when founded in 1979, and later changed their name to Locus and Focus in 1983. Just like the title of the exhibition, we hope this exhibition will serve as a new beginning and platform to weave a strong narrative about the history of modern art in Korea.
