Period/ 2013.04.04(Thu) ~ 2013.06.23(Sun)
SHIN Hak Chul, AHN Chang Hong

After an unusually cold winter, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art is delighted to welcome spring by presenting the exhibition Humans, Humans The Pictorial History of Ordinary People. This exhibition reviews the work of SHIN Hak Chul and AHN Chang Hong in the context of a pictorial history of ordinary people

From 1970s, these two artists have been representing anonymous people from history through their realistic painting. I welcome you to time travel through the art works of SHIN Hak Chul who strives to paint the history of humans and the figures of our past, and AHN Chang Hong who reinterprets ordinary people from history into anonymous portraits. SHIN follows the flow and chain of events and AHN gazes at the world of anonymous people, chasing the footsteps of humans who are, in fact, the hosts of history but do not figured in this rapidly changing period.

This exhibition features SHIN”s &lsquoHistory of Contemporary Korea – Gapsoonyee and Gapdolyee, including the drafts, and the archiving material that are important sources of this masterpiece, keeping track of the entire process of his visual awareness of history. The exhibition also presents AHN”s perspective of history expressed through his portraits, represented by pieces titled Forty Nine People”s Meditation, Bed Couch and the Arirang series. The visitors will rediscover the power of ordinary people alive today, recognizing the existence of everyday people as the actual subjects of history, despite remaining absent in the record of real life.

The ordinary people who experience modern and contemporary Korea will be explored in this exhibition through the features of people in the exhibited works. In addition, the visitors are not only able to experience the emotions of the populace from the past to the present through a micro-historical perception, but are also provided an approachable understanding of the power of painting and realistic art. Today, it is said that figurative painting is not a popular medium. However, this exhibition moves away from this stereotype of contemporary art and illustrates traditional figurative paintings in an accessible way for visitors.

We look forward to visitors focusing on the storytelling of the artists in the exhibition, to discover the true essence of the contemporary world we live in and the existence of common people who are fundamental components of our society and common history. Furthermore, We wish the exhibition space to play a role in connecting the past with the present, linking the viewer to the people in the paintings.
